"Standing Flies" Marty Stubblefield "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." - Galatians 2:20 NIV My favorite exercise at the gym are sort of "Standing Flies" that work my chest, arms and shoulders... where I stand in between two set of weights with a pulley handle in each hand... At the start of the exercise my hands and arms are extended wide with the handles in each hand... then I sort of lean in and pull the handles (and thus the weights) in a motion like I'm trying to wrap my arms around a barrel... and then slowly release that resistance to where my arms are once again extended out wide... It's my favorite exercise primarily because it's the last one of the workout... but also because I can feel it working... sort of feel the burn...and can fight through the tiredness of that workout to finish strong... After one such workout recently, I allowed my arms to rest while I still held the handles... and I sort leaned back... resting my back and body against my arms... my feet crossed below... iPod jamming the latest Praise music in my ears... As I looked up and opened my eyes... there I was staring back at myself in the gym mirror... but instead of seeing a sweaty, worn out me... it was almost like I caught a glimpse of Jesus... sweaty (and bloody), worn out Jesus on the cross... arms extended wide... feet and hands nailed to the cross... looking back at me... With my arms still extended wide... I tried to shake off the image from my mind to finish the workout... but couldn't quite get rid of it... the image sticking with me... as I pulled and resisted my way to the end... A reminder of how I continually crucify Him again and again... with my thoughts... my actions... my reactions... the sin in my life... A reminder of His arms open wide... of the love, forgiveness and grace offered by His death on the cross... and the victory of His resurrection from the grave... A reminder of Jesus living within me... and my need to strengthen my faith... so that the image of Christ is seen more and more in me... that I have been crucified with Christ so that it is no longer me that lives but Christ that lives within me... All that from a few sets of "Standing Flies"... strengthening my body... my heart... my resolve… Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem Marty Stubblefield is President of Hancock Bank in Tallahassee. In addition to his Commander in Chief duties over the Well's Married and Engaged Community Group, Marty is husband to Amy and father to 3.5 girls: Ellie (10), Abbie (8), Sarah Grace (4), and Ginger the Golden Retriever (3). |
