"Where Do I Begin?"

Todd Inserra

I always hear excuses for why people don’t like to study the Trinity.  Some say, “The Trinity is too hard to comprehend, so I’ll focus on other areas of the Bible,” or, “God as One, but also Three, is not something that I will ever understand, so why bother?”  What a terrible mindset!  Here at the Well, we recently began a new study series for anyone to attend called Theology 101, where we dive deeper into the teachings of Scripture that aren’t always preached from the pulpit (or the stage!).  I encourage you to come out the first Sunday of every month at 4:30 p.m.  We are starting off with what I believe to be the most essential principle of Christianity: the Trinity.  I believe this for two major reasons; (1) the Trinity is the basis of who God is, and (2) without it, salvation is not possible.  I am not saying that the atonement or the resurrection is not important, but rather that neither of them are possible without the Trinity.

So what does it mean to call God the Trinity? What does Scripture teach about the Trinity?  Well, to start, the Bible is clear that God is One.  Scripture is faithful and consistent to the fact that God is One.  Actually, this is probably the easiest part of the Trinity to understand.  Once we get to the New Testament, it gets complicated when Jesus comes, and Scripture still attests to God being One.  It’s difficult because Jesus is called God, yet Jesus prays to His Father!  On top of this, we see the Holy Spirit being called God!  So God is One, yet the Father is God, Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit is God.  It’s as simple as that!

This is what we will discuss at our Theology 101 session on Sunday.  Ok, try and stay with me here: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each is fully God while each is his own personal expression, in role and activity, of the one eternal and undivided divine essence.  Each is fully God, not one-third God.  Each has different roles and responsibilities.  Matthew 28:19 shows Jesus command his disciples to be baptized in the “name” (note that “name” is singular--not the plural “names”) of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  So the One God (name) is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!  Read John 1, Ephesians 1, and remember that God has revealed Himself for a reason.

The doctrine of the Trinity is important for us to understand because it reflects who God really is.  If we are to know God rightly, as Scripture has disclosed Him, we must understand that the One God of the Bible is none other than the One God who is Father, Son, and Spirit.  As humans we may never fully comprehend the Trinity, but that never gives us the excuse of being off-the-hook.  God has revealed Himself as Triune, and as His creatures we should all study and glorify Him exactly as He is; the Trinity

I hope that you will consider joining us a little early at Godby High School this Sunday, at 4:30 p.m., for this month’s Theology 101 session followed by the continuation of Dean's Losing My Religion series.
