"V...for Vendetta" Cari Bradley “So Cari…why do you go to church?” Uh…(cricket…cricket) Hold on. Rewind. See, I work with this guy, and we’ll refer to him as “V”. He’s… well…admittedly crazy. Not psychotic crazy, but more like governmental-conspiracy-theorist-meets-hippie-anti-Jesus-fanatic-crazy. I’ve honestly never met anyone like him before…EVER. I think our office could be filmed for a TV sitcom because it’s so entertaining and unpredictable. The majority of our entertainment comes from V. For example, he believes that, soon, dolphins are going to take over the world. “Google ‘dolphins and walking fins,’ and strap on your seatbelt, Cari, it’ll rock your world!” He also believes the apocalypse is coming in 2012, so he’s always preparing to “live off the land.” Do you see what I’m talking about?! You can’t make this stuff up! V knows I am a Christian. He always asks about my weekends, and knows my Sundays are spent working on the evening worship service for The Well. I’ve invited him, but so far no luck. He's joined me and my friends at various outings over the past few months. He’s met most of my close friends and thinks they are all hot (haha), and so of course he enjoys going to dinner with us at our favorite Mexican restaurant. The first time he came to dinner, he almost fell out of his chair when he saw margaritas on the table. And recently he has been asking me some hard questions. I love it. He asked me about two weeks ago, “What made you start going to church? Why do you go?” He knows I was not raised in church, and have never actually been with my parents. So I realized in that moment that I had the chance of a lifetime. Even though he had an agenda, I knew he’d find whatever he was looking for to support his vendetta against Christianity no matter how I responded. It wasn’t my job to persuade him. My responsibility was just to tell the story. I stuttered. I was horribly inarticulate. I repeated the same points twice. To be completely honest, I wasn’t prepared to answer his questions (it didn’t help that we were at work and the phones were ringing to interrupt us). But he was trying to debate, so I would inevitably lose. Even still, it didn’t matter. He and I were having deep, meaningful conversations. He was ready to find out why Jesus is so important to me. After I took some time to reflect on my conversation with V that day, I realized that I do not know the answers to a lot of “hard questions”. He has asked me a few more since then, and I realize even more that I don’t have it all figured out. Strangely enough, I have found it to be a beautiful thing. I cannot remember the last time I was challenged to the core about my faith. Challenged to dig deeper in what I believe, challenged to intensely study what the Bible says about tough issues, challenged to know why I hold dear to the primary truths I believe in every day. Why won’t I date or marry anyone who is not a Christian? Why do I believe the Bible is the inerrant, infallible Word of God? Why am I a part of a weekly Bible study? Why do we sing at church? Why do we meet? Wow…be honest, have you ever tried to answer questions like this with more than one sentence in Sunday school? Once you break the surface it opens so many more paths to go down to discuss and examine. It’s so beautiful! Our God is not boring and plain, but constantly reveals himself to us is new ways and will continue to do so until the day we die. My hope and my prayer for all of our members at The Well is that you are finding yourself in friendships and situations that produce conversations similar to those with V. Not only with non-Christians, but with each other as well. I know that if I ever find myself faced with a hard question and I can’t find the answer, I have plenty of people to ask for help. Talking about questions and issues like these in a Community Groups, on Sunday Nights, and with other leaders gets the discussion, and the conversation, started. |
