"Mother, May I?"

Scott Simmons

Motherhood.  Is there a more important role in the world?  I’d love to say fatherhood, but I know tonight at bedtime there will be only one person in the entire world that my K-bear will want, and it isn’t me.  I’d love to say engineer, but there are tons of things more significant than the quality of our roads.  Worship leader? Sure, it’s important, but as far as I can tell, Scripture places a higher priority in the leadership of my family than in how I serve my church.  Congressman?  Senator?  Fireman?  Doctor?  President of the United States?  Of course, they all carry weight and have impact on our world, but I’d like to suggest one reason why mothers may take top honors in the category of importance… they’re involved from the beginning.

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when I was a young, dirty-faced kid trying to take his first step.  I guess many things we can’t remember get lived out in pictures and on VHS tapes.  But, you may be like me and have plenty of lessons you learned from Mama along the way.  So, here’s ten quick quotes I heard often from my Mom’s mouth on my way to adulthood:

“Bad planning on your part doesn’t constitute an emergency on my part.”
(a lesson in time-management)

“One day your wife will cry for no reason.  Sometimes girls do that.”
(a lesson about women)

“If you get in trouble at school, you’re gonna be in more trouble when you get home.”
(a lesson on behavior)

“Wear loose clothes to bed… your body needs to breathe.”
(a lesson on health)

“If you eat everything on your plate, I’ll give you a quarter.”
(a lesson in bribery (or profiteering depending on your point of view))

“Never go to bed angry.”
(a lesson in love)

“We’re about 4 Cosby shows from home.”
(a lesson in telling time)

“When you get home from your date, wake us up. We want to hear all about it.”
(a lesson in parenting)

“We’ve been praying for the person you would marry since you were born.”
(a lesson in faith)

“We may have a lot of debt to pay off, but we sure made a lot of memories.”
(a lesson in priority)

Make your own list this week and thank your Mom for who you are today.

(MOM, I LOVE YOU!)
