"The One True Fairytale" Lindsay Knipple When I was a little girl I had dreams just like every other little girl my age; I wanted to be a beautiful princess. Adorned in my mother’s high heels and my grandmother’s old dresses, I would imagine that I was Cinderella at the ball, waiting for Prince Charming to sweep me off of my feet. I would picture the dragons he would fight on his way to find me…how he would sacrifice everything to be with me for even just a second. I would be the apple of his eye, and he would fight for me simply because I was valuable to him. My brother was five years younger than me so I was able to watch him grow up. I watched as he became obsessed with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. (I, sadly, still know the entire theme song to the show…heroes in a half shell…TURTLE POWER!) He would jump from bed to bed fighting off Shredder and saving the world from the evils-that-be. He would tie towels around his shoulders, running around the house singing….na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-BAT-MAN! His heart’s desire was to be a hero and to feel valuable in his own right. Our dreams, though different, were similar in many ways. As children we both needed to feel important. We needed to know that we were valuable and needed to be validated for our existence here on earth. We needed to have a cause worth fighting for, worth waiting for, and worth dedicating our life to. As I’ve grown up, I realize that those dreams never really died. They simply just changed form. I still have a deep desire to be pursued wholeheartedly by someone. My heart longs to be cherished and valued to the point of personal sacrifice. And though I may not dress in silly clothes and imagine fairy godmothers, I still secretly dream of having someone value me so much that they are willing to give everything for me, even to the point of sacrificing their life. And, although the cape is now retired to the linen closet, my brother, I’m sure, still has some of that little blonde-headed boy in him. The boy that wants to save the world, to be a hero, to have a cause worth fighting for and worth risking his life for. I think that this is yet another part of God’s plan that I am realizing was perfectly orchestrated from the beginning. God created us with needs and desires that can only be fulfilled in Him. So, when people say that these hopes of being princesses and superheroes are unrealistic, by earthly standards, they are right. If I seek this fairy tale ending in my temporary home here on earth, I am going to be let down. But, to quote a song, it’s only because “there’s a God-shaped hole in all of us, and it’s a void only He can fill.” Ladies, God says you are so valuable and so precious that he endured it all, to the point of death for you. He calls you the “apple of his eye” (Psalm 17:8) and His beautiful bride (Ephesians 5:27). Men, God has set you apart as men of strength and character (Romans 4:20, 5:4), as heroes in this epic battle between life and death. Believe me, He knows the desires of your heart…after all, He created you! So don’t stifle these desires by putting them away with the toy box…look to Him to fulfill them! In fact, the gospel is the most beautiful (and true!) fairytale ever told. (Wife to Shane and mom to Riley, Lindsay Knipple is in medical school at The Florida State University. This weekend she graduates as a part of the College of Medicine’s Class of 2008 and officially becomes Dr. Hinson-Knipple.) |
