"All in the Family"

Dean Inserra

This Sunday we conclude our series "The Fam." It has been a different style of series for us as we asked different folks from our Church to share about their family experience. I hope everyone enjoyed the change of pace and the insight that was shared about married life and parenting. I am looking forward to getting back to speaking at the Well this week looking at Proverbs 31. We will briefly return to talk about the fam on Father's Day.

I believe that understanding the Gospel is critical to family life.  When we embrace the truth of the Gospel we understand that the results from the fall in the Garden of Eden are still alive in the souls of people today. Everyone's spouse, parents, siblings, children, and extended family are far from perfect.  In fact, it goes deeper than that--all of us are sinners that are in desperate need of God's mercy. We have issues of selfishness, greed, lust, speech, etc. The beautiful story of the Gospel is that despite all of these hard truths about our own lives, Christ came to die for us.

Loving imperfect people. Loving you and me.

We must realize three things when it comes to our own families:

1. God placed us in our families. In Psalm 139 we read that God formed us while we were in our mother's womb. It is by no accident that we are members of our families.

2.  A perfect family does not exist. Every single family on the face of the Earth has issues. Yes, mine.  And yes, even yours.

3. The person and work of Christ demonstrates to us the perfect picture of love.

The Father did not have to talk the Son into going to the cross. He went willingly.

I will never be able to comprehend this.

Every relationship we have must be understood in the context of the Gospel. It is the absolute and perfect example of the great commandment where Christ told us that life was about loving God and loving people. I recently heard a Pastor say that the mark of maturity is love. That is pretty far down the list from where many religious people list the qualities of a mature believer.

I want to love like Christ. Since we can only love because he first loved us, I must understand the Gospel.

And I know that it will be much easier for my family to live with me if I do.
