"Spread the Word"

by Bennett Acuff

Inviting a friend to church can be awkward. That’s the truth. On the awkward spectrum, inviting a friend to church can fall somewhere between walking in on your parents having sex or asking a woman when her baby is due and finding out she had it two months earlier. Unfortunately, I have experienced both of these and quite frankly inviting a friend to church—especially someone who hasn’t shown any interest in the Lord—can be just as awkward. However, the reality is, it shouldn’t be, and it is in our nature as humans, and moreover our charge as followers of Christ to spread the good news. Whether this means telling a coworker about a Well community group or inviting someone from class to the Sunday service, we have the incredible privilege of sharing the Gospel with, and sometimes just simply extending the invitation to, the people around us.

In the Bible there are countless stories of individuals experiencing God: seeing the truth, and literally being unable to NOT tell people about what they have seen. Take Mary for example; when she saw the empty tomb she sprinted back to tell everyone. When Jesus healed someone, what was often their first response? They wanted to tell other people. The gist is, what we have at the Well is amazing. Through the worship service and Dean’s preaching, we are able to experience and enjoy God together. We should want to share that with others and not hoard it to ourselves or be embarrassed to invite friends. Hebrews 10:22-25 lays out Jesus’ vision of our reconciliation with God. Jesus meant for us to be:

  1. drawing near to God
  2. holding unswervingly to hope
  3. considering how we may spur one another on
  4. not giving up on meeting together, and
  5. encouraging one another.

All of these should challenge us to rally around each other—the community already at the Well—and go out and make an impact in our community.

Even aside from the Bible, we as humans long to share with other people the things that we care about, and the things that we cherish. Facebook and Myspace are such phenomenon because they allow people to share their likes (music, books, movies, etc.) with complete strangers. I don’t know about you, but when I read a great book, eat at a great restaurant, or watch a hilarious movie, the first thing I want to do is tell my friends. I want to talk to them after they read the book, eat at the same restaurant with them, or watch the movie alongside them to see their face. There’s tremendous joy in sharing what pleased you with other people and seeing them enjoy it too.

All of this is a very convoluted way of saying: Come on! This summer is an awesome opportunity for all of us to realize what we have at the Well, what God has revealed to us, and through prayer and encouraging one another we can create an awesome momentum to carry us into the fall. God is great. He has poised us to make a serious impact on Tallahassee. Let’s all realize that and spread the good news this summer and fall to our friends, classmates, and coworkers. Let’s toss aside our inhibitions and invite people to church not out of an obligation, but out of the inability to contain the sheer joy of knowing that Christ came to this world and died for us so that we may reconcile with God.

(Bennett Acuff is currently interning in Tampa, Florida and is in law school at The Florida State Univeristy. Bennett plans to marry Sally Inserra this August and come fall will return to his duties leading one of the Well's community groups.)
