"Without Ceasing"

by Krissie Inserra

Dean and I spent the weekend with a few fellow Well-ers at the annual Southern Baptist Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. After a few days of driving and meeting and greeting, I had to get back early to spend time with Tommy, who missed his mommy a whole lot. So I caught a flight this afternoon. You know that awkwardness on an airplane when no one says a word to each other? I really do want to talk to people, but I don't want to be the annoying one in seat 2A that won't shut up. So I just keep quiet the whole time. I did overhear the lady across the aisle from me telling the flight attendant that she was on an emergency trip home, as her daughter had just been in a car accident. I felt bad for her but continued my Sudoku game.

As the plane landed, the lady whipped out her phone and had a very animated conversation regarding her daughter and the fact that she would have to call the plastic surgeon tomorrow and I was able to gather that the daughter had been released from the hospital. So when she got off the plane, I asked her if her daughter was ok. I was thinking that she was a teenager who had been driving recklessly and had gotten off alright. Then the mother explained to me that she was in the car with her grandmother and uncle and the daughter was only nine.

9 years old!

She gave me the report as best as she knew it and we made small talk while we walked out of the jetway together. As she left, I mustered up a "Good luck!" Good luck?!? As a pastor's wife, I'm supposed to be a borderline professional when it comes to saying really spiritual things, or at the very least uttering an "I'm praying for you." And I did pray for her. But I knew that wasn't enough. I realized that as Christians, we have an amazing God who wants to interact with us through prayer. He wants to show his awesome glory by answering our prayers and teaching us about himself when we pray. I feel that if I honestly believed that I would really do what I Thessalonians 5:17 says and "pray without ceasing." I think we all would.

I wish I could tell you that I ran after this woman and prayed with her for her daughter. Or even just told her that I would keep her in my prayers. But I didn't. I just went to my next gate and sat down. And thought of what to write for this week's Well Said…
