"Stuff"

by Lawton Graves

In less than three weeks I am marrying the wonderful Sarah Scruggs (soon to be Graves). That has basically meant that for the last four months, and for the next couple weeks, whenever we spend time together it almost always involves working on some sort of wedding related ‘stuff.’ The thing about wedding ‘stuff’ is whether it’s fun (registering for gifts with a handheld laser contraption) or boring and tedious (putting stamps on 300 envelopes) it always seems to be focused around Sarah and myself and what we want, need, etc. It is so easy to lose sight of God, even though He is the one who brought us together, will marry us, and then keep us together for the rest of our lives. He is the one who created marriage for a man and a woman in the first place. You would think it would be easy to keep Him as the focus.

But isn’t this how everything in our lives seems to work? The truth is all of us have activities and obligations that dominate a large portion of our time. I devoted most of my time to school and work before I got engaged. But just like God should be the focus when I have to work on all the wedding ‘stuff,’ He should be the focus in anything that we do. I shouldn’t devote my time to work; I should devote my time to God and glorify Him through work. For me, this means constantly reminding myself that my actions should be motivated by Godly reasons, not earthly ones.

I spend time working on wedding ‘stuff’ so that Sarah and I can celebrate God’s awesome gift that is marriage. We want to be able to live out the gospel through our marriage and be able to use it to bring others to Christ. The difficulty arises in being able to keep this as my motivation when working on all the little details. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of sin and start thinking that it’s all about me and what I want, instead of what God wants. I t’s a daily struggle to keep Him as the focus of my life in everything that I do, but I’m so thankful that God is about to give me a wonderful wife to struggle alongside.

(Originally from Jacksonville, Lawton Graves will begin his second year of law school this fall at The Florida State University.)

MISSIONS UPDATE...
An update from the Well's Jason Priddle, on a summer-long mission trip to Colombia:

"This coming Thursday, June 19th, I'm headed on a week-long mission trip to a little town in the Colombian jungle called Montelibano. This town is home to more than 3000 families of internally displaced refugees who have to move because of the political violence and drug trafficking. I'll probably be working in evangelism and helping to take pictures and video. I'm headed with a lot of people, but safety is always an issue. Please pray that I wont get kidnapped (just kidding but not really) and that I'll be an effective witness for Christ."
