"Recover"

by Marty Stubblefield

“Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” – Psalm 46:10 NLT

Last Tuesday night I had the opportunity to play basketball with a bunch of guys involved with The Well and guys from a sister church… at their church gym… their home court.

So for maybe the second or third time in seven years or so, I ran up and down the floor… dribbled… passed… shot threes… rebounded… drove to the hole… played defense… fouled… and had a blast. Never mind that I was some twenty years older than most of the guys playing. When we’re on the floor, age doesn't really matter. It’s about the team. It’s about the fellowship. It’s about competition. It’s about playing hard. And ultimately, to be real, it’s about winning. Even in friendly pick up games between two churches.

And thus, pride, muscle memory and that competitive drive take over… even above and beyond common sense… above and beyond any age gap… and you push hard to make the play… make the shot… make the pass… stop the other team.

After two and a half hours of such fun, I finally made my way home and began to face the music… began to realize that I am quite a bit older than my fellow competitors… began to feel the stiffness and soreness in my hamstrings… in my calves… in my feet… in my very core… And the Hot Shower didn't seem to help.

The next day was even worse…
Day two… the apex of stiffness and soreness…
Day three… not much better…
Day four… beginning to ease up and workouts at the gym actually seemed to help.
Day five and Day six, everything seemed to be back to normal… Whatever that is?
Day seven… Back on the court… running hard… like I was… well… their age.

And through this process, I’ve come to realize that I don’t “recover” nearly as quickly as I once did… that it takes me two, three or even four days to bounce back when it was once a few hours or a day at the most…

And I realize that my life is much like the recovery and restoration process that I have from the effects of basketball.

I need time to recover… to be restored… to be renewed… to be revived…

Jesus calls us to be still… to be quiet… to rest in Him… Yet in this crazy world… in this ever-changing culture… I find that I don’t have time… rather, I don’t make time to recover… to be restored… to renew…

And that still small voice… after all the craziness… after all the running around chasing my tail… after trying to fulfill all my calendar commitments… that still small voice calls out to me and says, “Be still and know that I am God.”

Rest in Him… Take time to recover… to be restored… to be renewed… Jesus did… Why don’t I?

Keep the Faith… Carpe Diem
