"Identity Crisis"

by Natalie Fady

Have you ever experienced a wake-up call that made you question your identity or your faith?

My first two years at FSU were a very changing time for me. I came to Tallahassee for one reason alone: piano. Acceptance into FSU’s School of Music was probably my greatest accomplishment thus far. I didn’t particularly like the city; didn’t come here because of friends or my boyfriend at the time. I came by my own strength. See the problem yet?

The rest of my life was pretty much set. Thought I’d found the person I was supposed to be with. I knew the career I wanted, and knew just what I had to do to get there. Sure, I loved Jesus all along. But my relationship with the Lord at the time was a distinct entity—separate from the other areas of my life.

I had my future planned out. Problem was, God was not the basis of that plan. Heck, that wasn’t even his plan to begin with! My identity was selfishly founded on what I was doing, who I was with, and the career path I had chosen for myself.

Then God rocked my world.

Everything I thought was concrete in my life, God swept out from under my feet. The boy left the picture. God laid it on my heart to change my major, and I decided to pursue a different career. One thing after another… I was slowly being broken down to nothing—just what I deserved.

What a turning point. See, through this experience, I realized just how insignificant things of this world are. Who you’re dating, what you’re doing, even your relationship with a closest friend—can crumble in an instant.

Yet God never changes, never leaves, and always loves you.

Shortly after this breakdown, I found The Well. This past year, I have grown so much in my faith. Not going to lie, it’s a struggle every day! It would be so much easier to become complacent and seek happiness in things of this world that I can actually see and touch.

But I will never become complacent. Faith is a growing process. A year ago, God melted me down to nothing. And I praise Him every day that he did. Not because it didn’t hurt… but because he opened my eyes to His unfathomable power.

Once, I let the world define me. Now, my goal every day is to become more and more like the woman of Christ that He has created me to be. So let me ask you this…

Where does your identity lie?

(A former piano major, Natalie June Fady is studying Exercise Science as a junior at The Florida State University. Originally from Seminole, Florida, Natalie plans on attending Chiropractic School.)
