"The Art of Attraction" by James Parsons The following may disturbing, viewer discretion is advised! The type of “attraction” that I am going to discuss is not the typical “attraction” that you are probably thinking of. The type I am talking about pertains to outlooks and attitudes. Here at The Well, we talk about bringing people to church to help lead them to Christ. In order to successfully do this, the first thing we must do is look to the One who gave us the ultimate example in the Art of Attraction…Jesus. I encourage everyone to read the calling of the First Disciples in the book of Mark, chapter one. The story begins with Jesus walking beside the Sea of Galilee. The first people he sees are Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishing, and Jesus yelled out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately dropped their nets and followed him. The story continues with the meeting of James and John that unfolds in a very similar fashion. The thing that is most amazing to me in this story is the simplicity of Jesus’ words. He could have gone on all day describing to those men what would be in it for them to follow him, but his words were few and simple. Another thing that surprises me is the sincerity in his invitation. People are open to coming with you to church, you just have to ask. However, people can see right through you, when you really don’t care if they come or not. The truth of the matter is that people like the idea of bringing someone to church with them, but dread the fact that they might have to go out of their way to make someone else feel welcomed. This throws off our comfortable church-going routine. At The Well, everyone, from the Pastor, to individuals in leadership, to any church member, is fighting hard to combat this routine church experience, and for that I am grateful. Jesus is inviting us to become “fishers of men” just as he invited his disciples. In order for us to do that, our outlooks and attitudes must be in the right spot. We must work hard to master the Art of Attraction. A description of someone who has mastered the Art of Attraction is “someone who genuinely cares about the souls of men.” I couldn’t think of a higher earthly honor than to be described as someone who cares about the souls of men. What an awesome concept! We begin to realize that our selfish outlook on life changes into becoming a part of something that is so much bigger than ourselves. Our attitudes will change so that we leave whining and complaining at the door, and begin to do everything we can to ensure our guests and visitors feel welcomed. When it comes to salvation, nothing is to be taken lightly. The increasing amount of newcomers to The Well this summer has really been such a blessing to watch. We are seeing our people work together as the body of Christ to reach a city that is lost. I am convinced that this is just the beginning, and like we sing: “Greater things are yet to come...” (A student, a musician, and one of Publix's finest Seafood Specialists, James W. Parsons is originally from Tallahassee, Florida.)
