"Light-Switch" by Cari Bradley I am frustrated with the light-switch. I first saw it at church years ago, when I starting getting serious about my relationship with Christ. I saw people acting one way at church, and then doing a complete 180 outside of church activities. You know EXACTLY what I’m talking about; I don’t even need to explain. But I do need to explain. I’m not referring to the people that didn’t “get” what it means to have a relationship with Jesus. I’m talking about the people I looked up to at church. The light-switch factor involved their attitudes towards something that was “unacceptable and inappropriate” at church, but if we all hung out on a Friday night, they’d think it was hysterical. The best way I can describe it is that at church they were hyper-conservative, never inappropriate, swore off alcohol and secular music, spoke fluent Christianese, and never admitted to going anywhere in public except for Chick-Fil-A and Lifeway Bookstore. Outside of church, they had a pitcher of beer at their table at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s, only listened to hard core rap music, and were always up to date on the latest episodes of Desperate Housewives. Those things in and of themselves are not bad, don’t get me wrong (well, maybe the hard core rap…) and I’m not trying to suggest that we supply pitchers of beer to everyone on a Sunday night. But, when I saw those leaders pretend to be pious and perfect at church and then act another way elsewhere, I really began to examine my heart and my motives behind how I acted at church and outside in the real world. Did I hide parts of my life from people, pretending to be the cookie-cutter perfect Christian girl? I could very easily spin this to discuss the two-faced façade that Christians use to pretend they are perfect when they are really falling apart inside, but that is not where I am going. The main question is: why do we flip a light-switch as soon as we leave church and become a completely different person? Shouldn’t we act the same whether we are in church, or at work, or hanging out on a Friday night? What happens that makes us completely transform into a pillar of sainthood as soon as we walk through the doors of church? My point is this: do you flip a switch? Living in a Christian bubble that puts incredible false pressure on us to be perfect and still remain untainted by the secular world is just dumb. We are not supposed to be one step away from being Amish! How can we change what Mom’s idea of “started drinking…” is if we pretend we’ve never tasted alcohol? Maybe if Mom knew that we did enjoy a pitcher of beer at Beef-o-Brady’s with a bunch of friends, or watched Desperate Housewives, or listened to rap music, that her mindset might start to change, too. Then, who knows, the world might see us as embracing the ever-changing culture we live in, instead of rejecting it because of how “worldly” it might be.
