WELL SAID...

"The Gospel According to M. Night Shyamalan"
Scott Simmons

Sure, it sounded good.  Who wouldn't accept an offer for a few free acres of land to share with the family?  That was the proposition placed before me a few years back when my parents were trying to get us to move to Kansas where they currently live. If you haven't gathered it yet, my family is pretty close, and this was yet another attempt to keep us on the same block. The deal was this: my parents (who, I would argue are the greatest of all time) wanted to buy about 20 acres of land, divide it between us kids, and let us build our houses within a few hundred yards from each other - sort of create ourselves a little "village". I guess the next line was supposed to be that we would then live happily ever after. I can see it now...buying a few cows to milk, a few dozen chickens for eggs and thanksgiving dinners, saving gas money and babysitting costs, and instilling our own perfect set of values into the next generation of Simmonsville.

That's when I woke up to reality. The world around us is lost...sick... dying without hope... trusting in endless materialism...throwing all their cash into the latest craze and yet again falling further away from true satisfaction... buying the lie that good exists in us apart from Christ. Nations are waging war against nations. Children are perishing for lack of food, water, and shelter.  Christians are being persecuted for their faith to the point of death. The world is falling further and further away from God.

And all I wanted to do was escape it. Some would call that a great idea. God has another term for it... sin.

The words that Jesus spoke in Matthew 5:14 remain true for us and our church today. "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill CANNOT be hidden."  And as Dean echoed last Sunday night, we MUST love culture. We MUST love people. We MUST engage the world and show them that Jesus is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. We MUST leave our places of comfort and complacency, our dreams of power and prestige, and believe in the Creator of life and breath. We MUST take Jesus to the world.  That's what we have been called to do, and we MUST be obedient.  What's at stake? The souls of man (and to think I'd trade that in for a piece of land.)
