Jason Priddle Youth is such a paradoxical stage in life. We are constantly reminded to soak up and enjoy our youth to its fullest, while at the same time because of our youth we are often looked down upon or doubted by those who are supposed to be older and wiser. Such is the situation both for our church as a whole, a new body of believers here in Tallahassee, and for the members of our congregation as individuals, as the majority of us are either in college or in a stage of young professionalism. Being that our church is so young in both of these categories, I’ve heard many a challenge around town which in one way or another appear to doubt us in both authenticity and relevancy. Some doubts I’ve heard might sound something like: - “So you guys are actually a church? I thought you were just another college group.” - “I don’t think you can have church without an older congregation.” - “Your pastor is too young.” - “A bunch of college kids won’t be able to live authentic Christian lives with all of the pressures and temptations of this town." Our situation is similar to that of Timothy and the Church of Ephesus in 1 Timothy. Paul had basically charged Timothy to guard and pastor the young church at Ephesus, he himself still being considered a “youth.” Paul instructs in 1 Timothy 4:12-13, “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.” What a great responsibility and opportunity God is giving us. Many other groups in this town may look down on our church, but we can’t let them dictate who we are or what we do. Glorifying Christ and following His example are our ultimate concern. In our youth, right now, we are to set an example for Christ in our city in word, conduct, love, spirit, faith, and purity. This is the charge Christ gives each of us regardless of age. A life that models Christ’s character in all of these cannot be denied by others and is the key to reaching the ever-changing culture of Tallahassee. The second verse from above reveals our ultimate source for the means to live as such… the Word. Many churches in this town are trying to reach our emerging generation of “youth” with a solid vibe and edgy approach to ministry, but with shaky doctrine and a relativist approach to Christ’s everlasting truth. The only way to see our city impacted for Christ is for His Body to be sold out to His Word. Praise God that our pastor is absolutely dedicated to Christ’s Word. But God wants us all to be, and that’s what it will take if we are to live a life worthy of His calling. So let us, in our youth and adulthood, take our calling seriously. We are called to take Christ’s everlasting Truth to the ever-changing culture of Tallahassee, despite our youth, despite any naysayer, and in light of Christ’s grace towards us. So to all of the Well family, may Christ shine His light through us and may we never cease to glorify Him in every situation and circumstance.
