Todd Inserra Each time I open my Bible and think about the beauty of our Trinitarian God, I often find myself wondering how our generation would have dealt with the task of searching and developing doctrines that are so essential to the Christian faith. In a culture in which everything is already laid out for us, would we have fallen to the pressure of accepting a polytheist religion by acknowledging three gods, just as the surrounding religions and cultures did? This was the very challenge that our early church fathers faced. The problem is that we live in a lazy culture. A time when calculators do our math and the Internet does our research, there isn’t much that we must seek and establish on our own. Half of us can’t even explain the Trinity, which is the most essential doctrine in Christianity! But what if it was up to us to search the scriptures before any doctrine had been instituted, and to faithfully establish the truths that we all take for granted today? Do all of us even read our Bibles everyday? Every week? As servants of Christ, we all must make a pledge to stay faithful and dwell on God’s Word every day. Doctrines such as baptism, the Lord’s Supper, etc., are all important and should never be overlooked, because God has so clearly commanded us of such things. Our opinions aren’t what matter. Our experiences can’t hold the weight of what our walk with God is all about. It must be the scriptures! Our God says, “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight.” Let’s all thank God for the early church, who did not have already established doctrines per se, but had the scriptures which held those doctrines so clearly. Even so, there were councils held by passionate Christians who knew what the Bible said and would not give an inch. Am I being too bold to ask for members at the Well to be this passionate about the Word? I don’t think so. Let’s not just read scripture carelessly, as we read the T.V. guide, but let’s dig deep and read with the Trinity in mind, seeking to understand what God has so graciously revealed to us. For in the end the only thing that will matter is if we’ve been faithful to God, His Word, and His calling (see 1 Corinthians 4:1-2). (Todd Inserra will begin school at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary this spring) |
