"No Vacancy"

Scott Simmons

Joy to the world. For many of us, the lyrics of that popular song are easy to remember. We hear the song on the radio and our ears get plain giddy. Some of us are able to relinquish the exact time we last participated in its happy melody, singing it loud at a family get together or with friends at a party. We clear our throats anxiously waiting for the moment and then it comes… wait for it… NOW!… “Jeremiah was a bullfrog!”

Ok, so that’s another good song, but this week I wanted to take a glance at the ever-popular Joy to the World that we sing at Christmas time. I’d hate for us to blow right through this next week and totally miss the lyrics of the song that we’re singing this Sunday. The lyrics are these:

Joy to the world the Lord is come,
     Let earth receive her King
Let every heart prepare Him room
     And heaven and nature sing,
     And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

Joy to the earth, the Saviour reigns,
     Let men their songs employ
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy
     Repeat, Repeat the sounding joy

He rules the world with truth and grace,
     and makes the nations prove
     The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love
And wonders, wonders of His love

Now, did you know that the writer Isaac Watts (who also penned When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, etc.) never intended this to be sung as a Christmas song?  I wonder how he feels about that. I mean, we could just start beginning every wedding with We Will Rock You, but that probably isn’t the song future wives have in mind.  Nevertheless, what amazes me about these lyrics is how often he speaks of the world having joy. Heaven and nature… singing with it. Fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains resounding in it. All throughout Scripture we read about the things God created returning praise to him. And yet, Sir Isaac expresses the line that for him, I imagine, was a reminder… Let every heart prepare Him room.

As we prepare to celebrate another year commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem, make room for Him in every aspect of your break this winter season. Let the full purpose of His trip to earth sink in – that He would humble Himself low enough to become a babe in a manger to one day be lifted high on a cross, taking on the sins of the whole world, and to then blow open the doors of death in a final victory over the enemy! Friends, to know in light of who I am and what I have done, that He would make any room for me in His presence… well, Isaac called that the wonders of His love. I’m sure he and I would agree that’s a year-round experience.
